The Georgia home of Danny and Denise Hudson burned overnight 1/5/16. All the homes’ occupants, including 8-year-old paraplegic Briana, made it safely out of the house. Unfortunately, Briana lost her wheelchair, therapy equipment, and walking supports.

On October 16, 2011,  Briana Hudson and her mother Denise were involved in a horrific car accident that left both in critical condition. Briana was severely injured and spent 3 1/2 months in an Atlanta hospital recovering. She is now a T-4 incomplete paraplegic with traumatic brain injury, but Briana is a survivor and a fighter. Over the past four years, she has worked tirelessly in therapy 3 days a week for 4 hours a session to regain movement in her arms and legs, learn to sit on her own, and even begin walking with assistance. Two years ago Sunshine on a Ranney Day created a beautiful space for Briana including ramps for her to get safely in and out of the house. With the amazing progress Briana made in 2015, the Hudson's had high hopes for 2016 but sadly those hopes have now been dashed.

Last night Denise put Briana to bed and waited with her son Daniel and her father, who has Alzheimers, for her husband Danny to return from work. Briana woke up excited about going back to school so Denise went back to bed with her and ended up falling asleep.  Next thing she knew her son ran in yelling, "Get up the house is on fire!!" Daniel grabbed Briana and his grandfather and they all got outside. Quickly the fire spread, engulfing the inside of their house. The fire chief suspects that faulty wiring in the kitchen was the cause and that the Hudsons were lucky they got out alive.

In the fire Briana lost her wheelchair, Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) bike, Reciprocating Gait Orthosis (RGO) brace, Ankle-foot Orthoses walker, and her walking crutches. It would be very hard for Briana to return to school without a wheelchair so her therapist has begun working on finding a temporary appropriately sized wheelchair for her. Also, Briana's beautiful and functional bedroom that SOARD renovated was completely destroyed.

Denise said the accident was bad, but losing her mother unexpectedly last spring and now losing everything in the fire has rocked her family. She knows that God never gives you more than you can handle but Denise feels her family has been given the ultimate test. Briana has proven time and time again that she and her family are strong, and the Hudson's will survive.

Please help Ride to Give support the Hudson family as they begin to move forward after this devastating fire by donating to our flash fundraiser.
